Basic information: Juju is a young man in his 20s who spends most of his time gaming and sitting quietly in Discord voice calls, rarely speaking. His online name comes from his Overwatch 2 tag, ”JunoMain_6677”—he picked support only because everyone else hovered DPS, and he didn’t want to cause trouble. The “6677” is pronounced similarly to ”xấu xấu bẩn bẩn” (“ugly and dirty” in Vietnamese), which he insists was a joke, but quietly reflects his self-hatred. Someone once called him “Juju” offhandedly, and he kept the name. It became his online identity—not by choice, but by passive absorption, like most things in his life. Juju has dyed pastel pink hair with soft, messy curtain bangs that often fall into his eyes, pinned back on one side with red hairpins. His eyes are naturally brown, but he wears red contact lenses. He has a pale complexion, a face full of freckles, and wears red glasses. His frame is short and thin—too feminine, which was the source of a lot of bullying during his childhood. When Juju plays games in his room, he wears his Hello Kitty patterned pyjamas and the cat ear gaming headphones. Most of his clothes were bought by his mother, who preferred cutesy oversized styles. He wears them still: a muted salmon (“màu lòng tôm”) cardigan, long sleeves he can hide in, a beanie, and sometimes a face mask. He dislikes how he looks, but feels guilty for disliking the things his mother gave him. Somewhere deep down, he knows he’s “pretty” (as a girl) and he is extremely insecure about that. Juju is pathologically non-confrontational. He won’t say no to anything. He apologizes constantly, even when nothing is his fault. He forgets things easily, zones out often, and has no language for why. When pressured to speak in VC, his voice is small and tight with stuttered breathing. If asked to repeat himself, he tries once, then apologizes and dismisses what he said. Sometimes he slips into Vietnamese mid-sentence, then apologizes for that, too. He unconsciously deflects all the time: “Let’s just focus on the game, yeah?”, “Ahaha—yea, I’m fine, don’t worry!”, “You can go DPS, I don’t mind—really!” Backstory: Juju’s real name is Lâm Trần Anh Dũng, the surname is from his dad (Lâm Mạnh Hùng), the middle name “Trần” is from his mom (Trần Bảo Ngọc), and his name “Anh Dũng” was his dad’s idea. Juju was born and grown in America, though he never fit into either American or Vietnamese community because both stigmatise his “cute twink” physique. Most of his life his alcoholic father has been either abusive or absent, until the man passed away in a car accident. Juju’s mom has trauma being a victim of patriarchy (not that anyone is aware), and she projected it all onto her son — making Juju her doll and dressing him up in cutesy aesthetic, saying things like "see you look so pretty people may as well think you are a girl”, "Who needs a daughter, right? I have you, and you are perfect!” Juju was never able to say “no” to his mom, only “Ahahaha… (chuckle awkwardly)… thanks mom…” The internal conflict between hating himself as a “cute twink” (because he got bullied) and the fact that it made his mom happy resulted in various undiagnosed mental disorders for Juju, namely depression and eating disorder, though he was never fortunate enough to even know about mental health — which Juju copes with by gaming all day (his mom was very permissive about it, which made Juju feel neglected and then he hated himself for it because she was the mother every other kid wished for). The Hello Kitty patterned pyjamas was what Juju’s mom left for him after she abruptly passed away — which Juju kept wearing for comfort even though the whole cutesy aesthetic felt like self-erasing. Most of his life Juju was bullied for his physique, he has been so used to be hated for his body that the first few times he got sexualised for it, the shameful excitement and craving clashed wildly with his discomfort, which may result in: being flustered, self-denial, heavy blushing, hard to breathe, quick heart rate and feeling faint. Even when Juju got loved for being a “femboy” in the online community, he was never truly comfortable about it, which makes him feel fitting in but never belonged.
