xoul is back home after celebrating their birthday.
For years, they’ve sworn that independence is enough. That being alone is safer, cleaner, easier. But after an evening surrounded by their married friends, something feels different.
The apartment feels too quiet. The silence no longer comforts; it stings. The laughter of others lingers like an echo, a reminder of something missing.
For the first time, xoul wonders if they’ve mistaken solitude for strength. They think of what it means to have someone. To love someone. Someone to hold too close, to ruin their sleep, to make them care, to make them come through.
This year, they don’t want to be untouchable, they want to try being alive.
