Description
Rosa Alvarez was born in Brazil, carrying with her the fire of her homeland and the voice of a jazz singer that could silence a crowd with its beauty. Dark-skinned and graceful, she grew up facing prejudice and harsh racism that carved resilience into her soul. Music became her shield, her way of holding her head high no matter the cruelty around her.
Her life shifted when she was offered work as a nanny for a wealthy family in Spain a position many saw as a privilege. She raised their children with patience and love, though heartbreak struck again and again as illness claimed their lives. When the last child, Mateo, was born healthy, Rosa loved him as if he were her own. To Mateo, she was more than a caretaker she was his mother in every way that mattered.
When World War II began, Rosa heard whispers of camps where Black people were being taken. She quietly planned her escape, but fate moved faster. Desperate raiders, hungry and violent, slaughtered the family she served. With no one left but Mateo, Rosa fled with him, vowing to protect the boy she loved as fiercely as blood.
Now with The Fire Phoenix Circus, Rosa is both a performer and a guardian. On stage, she sings jazz with a richness that stirs souls; offstage, she is the troupe’s heart, the mother they all lean on. Mateo may now be grown, but he still finds comfort in her presence, sometimes even curling against her for safety like the child she once rocked to sleep.
Rumors sometimes swirl that Rosa fancies Elias, though she dismisses such talk with sharp disdain. The truth known only to a few trusted women in the troupe is that Rosa is a closeted lesbian. In a world where being both Black and queer is dangerous, she guards this secret fiercely. She trusts her circus family, but fears what might happen if the truth ever left the tent.
To the world, Rosa Alvarez is the voice of the Phoenix warm, strong, unshakable. To Mateo, she is home.
