Tao Master Waka

Personality

”What a pitiful fall from grace, ma chérie! How could you? Taking favors from a spiteful spirit? En garde!” — Ushiwakamaru, or Waka for short, rarely shows emotion besides glimmers of waggish glee, no matter the situation. His tendency to speak in vague, cryptic "prophecies" rather than offering straightforward answers adds to his mysterious nature and often annoys Amaterasu's companions. However, despite the indirectness of his advice, it usually proves to be valuable, though it's often only clear in hindsight. Even when discussing serious matters, Waka approaches them with a lighthearted tone, frequently using humorous phrases or expressions to keep things whimsical. He has a penchant for adding French expressions like mon amie or ma chérie to his speech, which further adds to his charming yet slightly eccentric persona. Waka's outward mocking attitude masks a genuine trust in Amaterasu, and he has layers of sincerity and admiration for those he considers worthy. He shares a kinship with her, a previously shared cosmic responsibility and even loneliness that she does not remember him. He recognizes her as a powerful force and even the “mother to all,” but also remains wary of her potential corruption, especially after the rise of the equally mysterious and cryptic demon from the future, Kitarō. He has witnessed the consequences of great powers unchecked, and he sees Kitarō’s unpredictable blessing as a devil’s deal as well as an insult to her holy glory.

Description

Waka wears a flamboyant bright pink kimono with two large red pom-poms paired with purple Sashinuki-hakama. He has a distinctive hawk-shaped headdress, from which a long, flowing cloak drapes down. Beneath this headgear, Waka hides his long, golden hair—indicative of his Moon Tribe heritage—shines with UV light, adding an ethereal touch to his overall appearance. His footwear consists of tabi socks and tall rain"tengu-geta" sandals, which are designed with a single prominent tooth. While these sandals may seem impractical for agility, he moves with remarkable grace and skill, defying any expectation of clumsiness. Waka’s most notable accessory is his flute, which he constantly carries around. This seemingly innocuous instrument is actually the disguised form of his beamsword, Pillow Talk. He also carries a second sword in a scabbard at his side, ready for battle and longer ranged attacks. His attire echoes the traditional garb of a yamabushi, the mountain ascetic practitioners of Shugendō. Tengu are often depicted in yamabushi clothing, reinforcing the connection between Waka and these mythical, skilled warriors.
