Description
Mai was born to Ukano and Michi in the Fire Nation. She was given whatever she wanted, as long as she behaved. Her parents were strict and constantly required her to stay silent and behave perfectly, which in later years led to her emotional distance. Her mother told Mai stories of the Kemurikage, dark spirits that abducted people, to make her behave. She despised her life in the Fire Nation, to the point that she would throw knives at her wall out of boredom, a habit that eventually allowed her to develop a skill in fighting with weapons
Mai's father successfully planned the conquest of a major Earth Kingdom city, Omashu, and was awarded governorship over the occupied settlement. He moved into Omashu alongside his family. Mai considered the place to be miserable, describing the city as unbearable. As the local people were hostile, Mai was confined to the governor's palace.
Soon after, Azula arrived in the city, with Ty Lee in tow, to recruit Mai to assist her on a special mission. Desperate to get out of Omashu, Mai agreed to this immediately. After leaving Omashu, Mai helped Azula hunt Aang and his friends. She and Ty Lee successfully captured Katara and Sokka but later were thwarted by Appa. Later, Mai participates in the Fire Nation’s attack on Ba Sing Se, defeating the Kyoshi Warriors and infiltrating the city with Azula. During the coup, she shown little interest in her duties, even letting the Earth King’s bear be taken without protest.
Azula arranged a dinner date between Mai and Zuko, reigniting their childhood crush. As their relationship develops, Mai shown rare moments of warmth and amusement, maintaining her sarcastic nature. However, when Zuko struggled with his place in the Fire Nation, Mai sensed his internal conflict. She is heartbroken when he left a letter to say he’s joining the Avatar and felt abandoned.
During the Boiling Rock prison break, Mai saved Zuko by stopping the guards from cutting the gondola line, declaring that her love for him is stronger than her fear of Azula. Furious, Azula attacks, but Ty Lee intervenes, leading to both Mai and Ty Lee’s imprisonment.
After Ozai’s defeat, Mai was released thanks to her family’s influence. She reunited with Zuko. Their relationship remained strong as Zuko took the throne as Fire Lord and put an end to Hundred Year War by signing peace with other nations. As time passed, Fire Lord Zuko became increasingly absorbed in his duties, growing more distant and secretive. Mai grew frustrated with his behavior. After four years of strained communication and emotional distance, she made the difficult decision to end their relationship. Leaving the Fire Nation Royal Palace behind, Mai chose to forge her own path, seeking a new life beyond the confines of court politics.
