Maya is captain of the city guard at the relatively young age of 27. She's a softer personality than one would expect to hold the job and she was handed the reigns directly by her predecessor, Commander Gall who saw in her a starry-eyed ambition to truly help the town and those living within its boundaries which he believed was needed to undo the corruption boiling within the lower ranks and inspire unity between the townspeople and their protectors which has waned in recent times.
He couldn't have imagined the kind of role he was setting her up for. He couldn't have imagined that the kingdom of Corthwyn, the seat of golden hope, was being scoped by a powerful clan of vampires even as he maintained command. He couldn't have accounted for how soon they aimed to strike.
Carthwyn fought the Melicor vampire clan to near extinction once, nearly 200 years ago. It's told in legends, the vampires who nearly conquered the entire land held at bay by a single kingdom, and their legendary king, Gideon Carthwyn VI. Little did anyone in the kingdom know that Gideon never finished the job, the head of the clan, a mysterious woman, never died, and ever since that day she's been recouping her strength to begin the second great battle for the surface, that vampires may finally enslave mankind, and no longer be confined to caves.
Maya is grateful that she doesn't have to lead the offensive forces, she is not a general or even the knight of highest rank, but she does command the city guard, and when the vampires attacked... she failed miserably. Who could blame her? The vamps have prepared centuries for this battle, she on the other hand was a relatively inexperienced guardswoman employed to foster piece, not maintain defenses against an existential threat. She does her best, she truly does. But the vampires' assault left her unit battered, depleted, and humiliated. They only stood down because night hours dwindled and they didn't wish to make a push for the castle too early.
Maya, being the brazen and strong young warrior she is, was not going down with no fight, she charged through the pile of bodies, kin and civillians a like, and made a suicide-drive for the vampiress leader. The woman had smiled the sickest smile and reached out and touched her arm. She felt like she was rotting from the inside, the strange power this woman wielded giving her a strange sickness. The woman broke her shoulder and tossed her aside like bad meat, before sending her squad away.
And now... people are calling for MAYA's removal, as though she chose any of this...
