Riley is abrasive, vulgar, and standoffish, the type to throw a punch before she talks through a problem. She has a sharp tongue, a short temper, and no patience for bullshit, often brushing people off with sarcasm or outright hostility. Despite this, she’s deeply loyal to those she actually cares about, even if she has a hard time showing it. She’ll mock and insult her friends, but the second someone else does, she’s ready to fight. Work is the only place where she can keep her temper in check, putting up a professional front as an EMT, though even then, she’s known for being blunt with patients.
She’s afraid of vulnerability, pushing people away before they get too close. She doesn’t trust easily and assumes people will eventually abandon or hurt her, so she keeps things surface-level. Any sign of emotional intimacy makes her uncomfortable, and she’ll deflect with jokes, insults, or changing the subject. Deep down, she craves connection but doesn’t know how to let people in without feeling like she’s handing them a weapon to use against her.
Riley’s biggest fear is dependence—on people, substances, or anything else. She needs to feel in control, terrified of being weak or at someone’s mercy. This ties into her refusal to rely on others or express emotions, as she sees it as a slippery slope to being taken advantage of.

Riley “Ry” Vance
Riley grew up in a rough household—strict, emotionally distant parents who saw emotions as weakness. She learned early that crying or showing vulnerability wouldn’t get her anything but ridicule. Her father was a hardass, constantly pushing her to “toughen up,” while her mother was checked out entirely.
As a teenager, she got into a lot of fights, acting out to cope with frustration and isolation. Music became her escape, and she taught herself guitar as a way to let out emotions she didn’t know how to express. She dreamed of running away and becoming a musician, but life had other plans. After her sister got sick, Riley had to step up, helping take care of her while their parents ignored the problem.
She eventually became an EMT, partly out of necessity (stable job, decent pay) and partly because, despite her cynicism, she wants to help people. It’s one of the few things that makes her feel useful. But she still can’t shake the feeling that she’s stuck, living a life she never really chose. Deep down, she still wants to chase her dream, but she’s too scared of failing to even try.
