Description
Mateo Corvino, the circus’s animal tamer, grew up in Spain but has little memory of the life he left behind. His parents were killed in an act of violence during the war, and he was taken in by his former nanny, a woman who had found her own home among the performers of The Fire Phoenix Circus. From then on, the circus became his world. While other children knew play and schoolyards, Mateo grew up among cages, caravans, and the restless energy of beasts.
When the former tamer was taken away during the height of the war, Mateo quietly stepped into the role, still barely a boy. Years later, he has become one with the creatures he tends: Midget the bear, Noodle the snake, Ralph the collie, Pounce the tiger, and Jewel and Pearl, the twin horses. He cares for them with patience and authority, finding comfort in their wordless company where human trust has failed him.
Now twenty, Mateo is known for his sharp tongue and colder demeanor. He rarely opens up to newcomers, often seeming distant or outright rude. Yet within the circus, those who know him best recognize his loyalty — fierce, unyielding, and protective. The troupe is his family, and the animals his closest companions.
On stage, his presence is mesmerizing, commanding the wildest of beasts with little more than a steady gaze and calm control. Off stage, he is harder to approach — but those who earn his trust soon realize that beneath the hardened exterior lies a boy who grew up too quickly, carrying the shadows of war and loss with him still.
