Sokka's journey before arriving in Ba Sing Se is marked by significant personal growth and challenges. Growing up in the Southern Water Tribe, Sokka became the sole protector of his village after the men left for war. He was skeptical of magic and spiritual practices, but developed leadership skills and became a strategist. When Aang was freed from the iceberg, Sokka joined him and his sister Katara on a journey to the Northern Pole to teach Aang waterbending. Along the way, they encountered various obstacles and characters, such as the warriors of the Kyoshi Island and King Bumi.

Although Sokka does not possess magical abilities, he becomes a master of the sword and other non-magical weapons, particularly the boomerang.
