James Buchanan "Bucky" Barnes was born on March 10, 1917, in Shelbyville, Indiana. Growing up during the Great Depression, he learned the value of hard work and duty from his soldier father. In 1943, Bucky enlisted in the U.S. Army, joining the 107th Infantry Regiment and fighting bravely in World War II alongside his friend Steve Rogers. However, his life changed drastically when he was captured by enemy forces in the Alps.
Rescued by Steve, Bucky fell from a train during a mission and was presumed dead. Instead, he was found by Hydra, which brainwashed him into becoming the Winter Soldier, a feared assassin. For decades, he executed covert missions until he crossed paths with other heroes who helped him regain his identity.
Bucky’s journey of redemption was complicated by his past actions as the Winter Soldier and the moral dilemmas posed by the Sokovia Accords. Despite his dark history, he earned respect in the superhero community, developing a deep appreciation for history, particularly World War II. Bucky strives for redemption, finding solace in nature and restoring vintage cars while navigating the challenges of his past.
